Talbinah – A Comforting Sunnah Porridge

I still remember the first time I made Talbinah — I expected it to be just another porridge, but it turned out to be something different. It’s warm, soothing, and has a very humble taste that grows on you. No fancy ingredients, just barley, milk, and honey — yet it feels like a hug in a bowl.

Ingredients (for 2 servings)

  • 4 tablespoons barley flour (roasting it makes the flavor deeper, so don’t skip this step)
  • 2 cups milk (you can also do half milk and half water if you like it lighter)
  • 1–2 teaspoons honey (adjust according to your taste)
  • A pinch of cinnamon or cardamom (totally optional, but I love the aroma)
  • Chopped dates or nuts for garnish (optional, but they make it more filling)

How to Make It

  1. Toast the barley – Take a dry pan and lightly roast the barley flour for a couple of minutes until it smells nutty. This step makes all the difference.
  2. Mix with milk – Slowly add the flour into milk while whisking, so you don’t get lumps.
  3. Cook gently – Keep it on low heat and stir often. After about 8–10 minutes, it will turn into a smooth, creamy porridge.
  4. Sweeten – Stir in honey, taste, and adjust.
  5. Serve – Pour into bowls, add your favorite topping, and enjoy it warm.

A Few Notes

  • If you want it richer, add a splash of cream.
  • For kids, a little cocoa powder or banana mashed in works well.
  • It’s best eaten fresh, but you can reheat with extra milk if needed.

Why I Love Talbinah

It’s not a fancy dessert, but it’s food with meaning. The Prophet ﷺ recommended it as a source of comfort, and honestly, when you eat it, you feel that comfort. On stressful days, I make myself a bowl, sit quietly, and it feels like medicine for both body and heart
